Invest while preserving liquidity: leasing and hire purchase for high-pressure equipment
A new contract has come in, but your existing high-pressure equipment is not sufficient. At the same time, you need capital for staff, materials or other investments. In this situation, leasing and hire purchase are worth considering. Both models can allow you to acquire equipment through agreed instalments rather than paying the full purchase price upfront.
The right solution for your business depends on the planned use, your budget and whether you want to own the equipment in the long term. At CLENA, you can discuss these considerations as part of the equipment selection process.
Why financing should suit the application
Professional high-pressure equipment needs to do the job and make financial sense for your business. Two questions are therefore important when planning: what equipment do you actually need, and what regular payments can your expected utilisation support?
A machine that initially appears less expensive can turn out to be the wrong choice if it provides insufficient flow, unsuitable accessories or the wrong water temperature for the job. Equally, a system only needs to deliver the performance that makes sense for the application. A suitable technical specification is the starting point for a meaningful comparison of financing offers.
Leasing: use high-pressure equipment for regular payments
Under a lease, the equipment is made available to you for use over an agreed term. You pay the instalments specified in the contract; ownership generally remains with the lessor. The equipment can be selected to suit your requirements.
This model can be attractive if you want to use high-pressure equipment over a defined period and limit the capital committed at the outset. What happens at the end of the term depends on the individual contract. Return, continued use or other end-of-term options therefore need to be clarified in the specific offer. Automatic transfer of ownership is not a basic feature of leasing.
Hire purchase: plan the acquisition with ownership in mind
With hire purchase, the focus is on ultimately acquiring the equipment. The agreed amount is paid in instalments. Legal ownership generally transfers to the purchaser once the final agreed instalment has been paid. This model may therefore suit equipment that is intended to become a permanent part of your business assets.
Initial payments also matter when planning your cash flow. In addition to a possible down payment, VAT can be a factor. Ask for the quotation to set out which payments fall due and when. This allows you to see how much capital you will need at the start and throughout the term.
Outright purchase, leasing and hire purchase at a glance
| Model | Payment structure | Use and ownership |
|---|---|---|
| Outright purchase | The purchase price is paid according to the purchase agreement. | Ownership is acquired under the terms of the purchase agreement. |
| Leasing | Agreed instalments over a fixed term; additional payments depend on the contract. | Use of the equipment; ownership generally remains with the lessor. End-of-term arrangements need to be considered separately. |
| Hire purchase | Agreed instalments; initial payments and VAT must be taken into account. | Ownership is intended to transfer, generally after payment of the final instalment. |
Compare the total costs
A low monthly payment alone tells you little about which offer makes financial sense. Consider the term, number of instalments, additional payments, possible fees and any final payment. Also check whether maintenance or insurance is included or needs to be budgeted separately.
Your business calculation should also include ongoing costs for energy, water, wear parts and accessories. Compare these costs with your realistically expected utilisation. Financing spreads payments over time; it does not replace an assessment of the investment’s financial viability.
If you only need equipment for a single contract or a short period of additional demand, temporary rental is also worth comparing. The right solution depends on how long and how frequently you will actually use the equipment.
